Lucy Clark

February / March

It was on a visit to Art in Action in 2003 that Lucy was introduced to the art of lampworking having watched glass artist Diana East manipulate molten glass with a small flame. Keen to learn more, she went on a weekend course with Diana and on her return set up her small studio in her garden, making beads for glass jewellery. Although enjoying this hobby, Lucy wanted to try other forms of glass making and attended a fused glass course at the Liquid Glass Centre in Bath in 2005. It was here that she met someone who had completed a degree in glass design, taken at the University of Wolverhampton.

In September 2006, Lucy left the world of financial services behind her and moved to Wolverhampton to begin a course in Design and Applied Arts (Glass). This was a fantastic opportunity to rediscover drawing and learn about different glass making techniques including; glass blowing, hot glass casting, kiln forming and casting and architectural glass. Lucy completed her degree in June 2009 and at the final show was awarded the Professor Keith Cummings prize to work as an artist in residence for a term at the University.

Deciding to stay on at Wolverhampton, enabled Lucy to pursue an interest in Kiln formed glass, in particular casting, which is challenging and exciting. Making good use of the facilities, she wanted to create strong pieces that had an element of core casting and incorporated texture. The resulting work known as ‘Industrial Mettle’ is based on the City of Wolverhampton. Lucy has recently moved back to Bucks but continues to be inspired by the industrial City she left behind.
