This work is from a series of ‘botanical’ drawings of forest species begun early 2005. It is as much about the marking of a passage of time and the performative act of the artist as it is about the resulting delicate pencil image. Time is referenced both as a human construct and through seasonal change and decay: the time of day is noted as the drawing progresses (and pauses) along with the wilting of the subject towards the end of the time allocated for each drawing.
The desire to record something of the transience of life along with a desire to look direct at the world (to step away from the screen) began with these drawings and continues in recent works where drawing tests different processes of imaging (and imagining) place.
